Harriet Cowhey
Organist/Choir Director
Harriett Cowhey started her music education at the age of seven and had the fortunate opportunity
of studying with an excellent teacher in
Springhill, La. where she grew up. She attended Southern Methodist University
in Dallas, TX. where she graduated with honors, majoring in music education and sacred music. She
chose SMU specifically to study with world renown Dora Poteet Barclay, who had studied with Dupres in France.
After moving to Tucson in 1967, she taught music education in Benson,
Az. for two years. One of her avid interest throughout her life has been musical
theatre. She worked at Playbox Theatre until Southern Arizona Light Opera Company (SALOC)
opened its doors. From then on SALOC was her life. After working as accompanist for a few years, she was offered the job
of Musical Director/Conductor for SALOC.
A short list of the many shows Harriett conducted at SALOC includes:"South Pacific", "Fiddler on the Roof", "Man of La Mancha", "My Fair Lady", "Oliver", "42nd Street", "Evita", "The Pirates of Penzance", "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" and
"West Side Story". She also arranged many orchestral pieces for "On The Light Side", "The Wizard of Oz", "Pirates", "Peter Pan", "Molly Brown", "Destry Rides Again" and "Singing in the Rain".
Her journey to Temple Emanu-el and Mt. Zion has served to complete the golden years of her life. To provide the best and most
inspirational music for the services at Mt. Zion
is her primary goal and purpose.
